Teachers

If you are interested in working in Italy Teachers In Italy may be able to help you.

We are an employment agency working for language schools throughout the region. To work in Italy you must:

Be an EU passport holder or have a valid work permit

To obtain a visa you must have a job offer. It is very unusual for a school to make an offer to a non visa holder. Sorry but, we can not help with visa applications.

Have a recognised TEFL qualification - CELTA and Trinity are the best recognised certificates in Italy but any certificate with a minimum of 100 hours tuition and some observed teaching is likely to be accepted.

Our service is free to candidates but you should clearly understand how we operate.

When we began we tried to maintain a database of teachers. This proved impossible because teachers were not very good at advising us about changes of availability.

Our system now is to advertise vacancies as we are asked to fill them and email details of vacancies to all teachers have asked to be advised any opportunities we identify.

You can add your name to our email list here

Teaching English as a foreign language is not a path to riches. It is a good way to live in a different culture, make new friends and contacts and enjoy a host of new experiences. If you are looking for job security, regular hours and a good pension scheme this is not the job for you.

You should try and get answers to the following:

Does the school pay for travelling time? Some do not and if you are working in a large city you may spend anything up to an hour travelling to and from a client's premises.

Will the school let you talk to existing teachers so you can find out what it is like to work there? All schools need the flexibility to ask you to sometimes work split shifts but if all of their teachers are always working 8am to 11am and 5pm to 8pm you will be left with a lot of time you can not use.

When do they pay/Do they pay on time? For example we did some teaching work for World Wide School of English. The contract specifies payment on the 20th of the month following the work but they consistently failed to meet even this. For details of negotiations about this point Click Here. Information for students thinking about enrolling with World Wide School of English can be found Here

The nature of the business requires that schools demand a good deal of flexibility from their teachers, can you expect some degree of flexibility if, for example, you have to return home for an emergency?

Will the school give you a contract with a guaranteed number of hours each month? ((A contract guaranteeing 100 hours a month together with three or four private clients will enable you to live reasonably well in Italy for example).

Does the pay reflect local conditions? It is for example anything up to a third cheaper living in Genova rather than Milan.

In summary, there are good and less good employers and you should ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises. Teachers in Italy has a policy of advising clients everything we know about candidates that we present and candidates everything we know about potential employers. Our aim is to ensure that nobody gets any unpleasant suprises!!

Please note that teachers In Italy will interview all candidates before introduction to potential employers and will take up references before contacting you to arrange an interview. We will acknowledge all applications.
